We’ve joined forces with legendary designer Katharine Hamnett for Spring Summer 16, collaborating on a concisely edited collection that launches instore and online this week.
A political activist as well as one of Britain’s most influential designers, Katharine Hamnett has campaigned tirelessly for social and environmental issues since the early 1980s. This ideology informs her ethical business philosophy, and we’ve drawn on these values for the Katharine E Hamnett x YMC collection.
The collection is built around three unisex slogan t-shirts, inspired by the designs that Hamnett is perhaps most renowned for. She was one of the first designers to utilize fashion as a tool for social commentary, saying of her iconic t-shirts: ‘Slogan t-shirts are still powerful, you can’t not read them – they stay in your head.’ Bearing the statements ‘Save the Future’, ‘Stop and Think’ and ‘You Must Create’, our collaborative tees have been crafted from sustainable, organic cotton and printed with environmentally friendly ink.
To accompany these, we’ve selected and re-worked some classic Hamnett archive pieces. Utility pants and oversized shirting feature – in organic poplin for men, and bio-dynamic silk for women. All the pieces were made in Italy, with the aim of creating a collection that honours Katharine Hamnett’s legacy and ethos.
We’ll leave the last word to Katharine Hamnett herself: ‘I’m really happy to be doing a collaboration with YMC, a great British brand, using bio-dynamic silk and organic cotton, made ethically and as environmentally as possible.’
