MOONSTAR X YMC

Started in 1873 and based on Kyushu, the southern island of Japan, Moonstar is famous for its fine vulcanised rubber sole footwear. This technical process can be performed in just a handful of factories around the world, and requires the handcrafting talents of specially trained and skilled craftspeople.

The Moonstar Hi Basket returns in three neutral colourways for the new season, continuing YMC’s collaboration with the 150-year old Japanese footwear specialists. A signature vulcanised rubber outsole is positioned below a pared-back canvas upper on this streamlined unisex style for AW22.

The Moonstar Hi Basket possesses several key details unique to this design. Most visible is the loop at the back that has been added to make putting the shoe on easier and more comfortable. More subtle details have been added to aid the shoe’s durability, including special reinforcement along the side upper and piping along the topline. Stylewise, refined alterations on the heel and the toe create a modern take on the classic silhouette. And the eight eyelets and stitching add subtle details to the design’s pared-back simplicity.

About the collaboration, Fraser Moss, YMC creative director, says,

“This legendary style of canvas boot has been the choice of footwear for tearaways, delinquents and hoodlums since the birth of the ’50s teenager. A classic – alongside the five-pocket jean and the white tee – these iconic boots remain forever stylish.”
